Girls Education
Dare to believe that girls matter.
We believe girls are the most underutilized resource in the world.
- If you educate 10 percent of the girls in a developing, the country's economy grows and prospers by 25 percent.
- If you educate a girl in a developing country, the infant mortality drops.
- If you educate a girl in a developing country, the level of militancy drops.
- When women and girls earn income, they reinvest 90 percent of it into their families, compared to just 30 to 40 percent for a man.
Entire villages exist in Afghanistan where no woman or girl can read or write. Mountain2Mountain believes education is a first step and not the ultimate goal. When women and girls are given the tools not just to read and write, but to critically think and understand the political and social issues that affect them, they strengthen their ability to be heard and respected. They become catalysts for change within their own country. This will do more for gender equity, violence against women and children, the health of women and children and economic growth than anything we can do.
Programs to educate women and girls must be followed with vocational training and job creation so that women across Afghanistan can earn the respect they deserve, make robust contributions to local economies, and change the course of women’s rights village to village.
