Shaima's Story
Students like Shaima represent the hope and the future of Afghanistan. Shaima attends a girls secondary school in Kabul and is in the fourth class. Shaima and her classmates are the lucky ones. They have families that support education for girls and they have a school to attend.
Shaima is 10 years old and has an easy smile that belies her tough spirit. She wants to be a doctor, a profession frought with challenges for Afghan women. But her family’s support means she has a fighting chance at finishing her schooling and attending Kabul University. Ten years ago this would have been impossible. She would have been unable to go to a “real” school. Instead, she would have had to be homeschooled alone and in secret. She would have had little choice but to be married at a very young age and start a family. Ten years ago, a career outside the home was unimaginable for Shamia.
Today she is a student at one of M2M’s computer labs. She will learn to use a computer to write papers, develop Powerpoint presentations, and correlate research. Shaima will be ahead of the game when she enters high school. Eventually the internet will be more accessible and the entire world will be available to her.
