Strength in Numbers
After five years working in Afghanistan, Mountain2Mountain will launch it first domestic program, ‘Strength in Numbers’, in the United States, targeting young women at-risk, female military veterans, and violence survivors. Utilizing the bike as a vehicle for social justice!
Strength in Numbers is an evolution from Mountain2Mountain's work with women and girls in Afghanistan and founder, Shannon Galpin’s continued push on gender and cultural barriers by becoming the first woman to mountain bike there, a country where women are not allowed to ride bikes.
Week-long retreats will challenge women on both dirt and water with daily mountain biking with coaches and pro racers alongside lake and river SUP with pro SUP racer, Brittany Parker.
The strength, confidence, camaraderie, and empowerment developed during the program is only the first step. The ripple effect of the retreats is created as the women take part in community social action projects after their camp - back in their communities, or overseas with Mountain2Mountain projects.
Citizen diplomats creating grassroots change from the ground up, creating an impact of social action way beyond what any one organization like Mountain2Mountain could create.
Please help us launch our first camps in Aspen, Breckenridge, and Moab in 2013!
We have amazing partners to help us launch our first camps in Aspen, Breckenridge, and Moab! Skratch Labs leads the charge, with co-founder and visionary Dr. Allen Lim throwing his weight behind the partnership with his statement after our first meeting, "let's do something unforgettable." To start, Skratch Labs will be cooking for all the women, just like they do for the pros. They are also helping with funding and building up our architecture and sustainabilty. To that end, Allen linked us up with Alchemy Bicycle Company and Primal Wear who are making sure our ladies have a killer bike to ride and rockstar team kits! Aspen based Shredly designed a one-of a kind mountain bike short for our program and is helping rally the community for our first camp in July. Long time M2M partner, Osprey Packs is providing all the women hydration packs and helped with funding the camps. Last but not least Pedros is creating base camps with a full bike mechanic set up. These key partners have all generously stepped in to help make our first year a massive success. Applications and more information will be available online in February 2013.
